YLTO to RockRidge Canyon!

Author: Glenn Cook
10 of us from Toronto joined over 200 others from Ontario Young Life at Pearson Airport on August 11.

We had just gotten off the bus at RockRidge Canyon after a long day of travel.  I could see the faces of our Toronto guests, the steep rock cliffs of the canyon behind them.  The three program directors were on the microphones, welcoming us to a week of fun and adventure along with 330 others from Ontario and other parts of Canada.

And what happened next I'm sure was partly exhaustion. I'm also sure that part of it was not.  My eyes filled with tears as I realized that it was finally happening: There were teenagers from Toronto at Young Life Camp.  Becky and I and our teenage daughter moved to Toronto three years ago to help build a team and to be a part of a team that would start Young Life ministry  in this city.  We said yes to Jesus, so that teenagers may have a chance to know Him also.

The task is not nearly finished, but another important milestone has been reached, and we are celebrating.

I asked each of the girls to write a few words at the end of their week, and below are a few things that they said:

"This camp has left me with joy, confidence, and unforgettable moments that I will always carry in my heart with thankfulness."

". . . I instantly knew I belonged there."

"I'm so glad I went to RockRidge even though the first days I kept saying 'Nah, I can't do this.' but it was about overcoming fears and having some fun."

"I also learned a lot during . . . club where we were taught about building our lives on Jesus."

"This has been one of the memorable experiences I have ever had in my life."

"I also grew closer to my Young Life leader which was fun, like I made a lifelong friend."

For each of the girls who went, this camp experience was an amazing next step in their journey of life and faith.  We look forward to walking with them and continuing the adventure back here in Toronto.
