This week, we have our next WyldLife club, a ministry that has taken root in Midtown over the last year. All of the fun, food, and craziness of a WyldLife club culminates in what we call the "club talk."The club talk is our opportunity to share with kids the hope found in Jesus. A few key characteristics of a Young Life or WyldLife club talk:
The club talk is almost always given by one of the club leaders, rather than by a "special guest" or "speaker."
At a Young Life or WyldLife club, we want kids to hear the message from someone that they know, someone that has earned the right to tell them about Jesus.**A good club talk is always on the short side, and generally has one point (no 3-point sermons :) )**We want to get and hold their attention, and leave them with an idea that they can continue to ponder afterwards. As a leader, I always want to be able to walk up to any kid after club and say "What was the talk about?" and have them give me a quick answer without thinking too hard. **A good club talk puts Jesus at the center.**The reason we do all of this is so that the person of Jesus is lifted before the eyes and hearts of young people so they can discover His excellence and uniqueness. We are there to tell them about a Person, not just belief system or a set of values. Do I think that every talk, speech or sermon needs to follow these characteristics? Of course not. I sometimes serve as a guest speaker, have delivered plenty of 3-point sermons, and have benefitted from talks and sermons on all kinds of topics. However, I do believe that the Young Life club talk approach fits our audience best, and is what we as a mission have been called to as we share Jesus in a relational way.
